Hair Loss In Women
Men
aren’t the only ones who suffer from hair loss. Hair loss in
women is a common and much dreaded condition as well. If
thinning hair is worrisome for a man, just image the impact it
has on a woman. Although most male hair loss is due to a
hormonal imbalance, this is not the case for women. Testosterone
is just one of many reasons contributing to hair loss in women.
This does not, however, make you more masculine. All women
produce the male hormone, not just women suffering from hair
loss.
All women will suffer some hair loss, as we grow older. This is
just a fact of life. Many women who started out with a full,
thick head of hair will still suffer some hair loss, it just
won’t be as noticeable. If you started out with thinner, fine
hair your hair loss will be more pronounced. But take heart,
just because hair loss in women is inevitable, there are
treatments available to you to help slow down the process and
increase the production of healthy, fuller hair.
There are a variety of reasons that contribute to women’s hair
loss. Overproduction of testosterone is one of them but this is
usually caused by a tumor or some other serious underlying
medical condition and is rare. More common causes of hair loss
in women are age, iron deficiency, drug reactions, stress,
long-term illness, childbirth, and long-term damage to the hair
follicles. Although menopause doesn’t cause the initial
thinning, it can contribute to its severity. Heredity also plays
a part in women’s hair loss. Look around at the older women in
your family. Do they still have a nice, full head of hair? Did
their hair thin out as they grew older? Chances are, you will
follow the same path as they have.
Like their male counterparts, women’s hair can begin to thin in
their early 20’s. Hair loss in women usually begins at the part
and eventually leads to a thinning of the hair throughout the
scalp area. As women age, the thinning becomes more pronounced.
Unlike men, however, women vary rarely suffer from balding at
the forehead area, thank goodness!
So, just what can be done about hair loss in women? First, check
with your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions
that may be the cause. Research any medications you may be
taking and see if hair loss is a side effect. If so, talk with
your doctor about switching to a different drug. If stress is
the cause, don’t worry. Once you are back on track, your hair
will follow suit. Eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of
water, and get plenty of rest. There are also vitamin
supplements and shampoos designed to treat hair loss in women
that can help keep your scalp healthy and your hair follicles
strong and active. Just remember, hair loss does not have to
define you as a woman. There is help available to you.
