For people suffering from hair loss, treatment of that hair loss is usually a top priority. Although there are numerous treatment options available to you, some of these can be quite expensive and time consuming. Wigs and toupees are available in a wide variety of types and styles as an ulterior option. So, just what are the pros and cons of wigs and toupees to hide hair loss? For many suffering from hair loss, a good wig or toupee can be a godsend. Although, the words “wigs” and “toupees” often conjure up images of stiff, fake looking hair blowing in the wind in one big lump, with the advancement of modern technology, it can now be almost impossible to tell the difference. Wigs and toupees are now made of synthetic or natural human hair and can be styled to your liking. They can also be worn in water and wind without fear of them falling off. Adhesives have been developed to help combat this common problem with hair systems. With this type of attachment, the hair system is actually connected to the scalp using polymer. There are disadvantages with this type of attachment as well, however. Not only may the adhesion be uncomfortable, but it can make the hair and the hair system difficult to clean.

As I mentioned before, there are many other options available that will treat and cover up the problem of hair loss. Some of these treatments come in the form of supplements and shampoos, while others require more invasive techniques such as surgical hair transplants and plugs. For many, the pros and cons of wigs and toupees to hide hair loss just isn’t an issue. Drug therapy can be expensive and the results can take a considerable amount of time to show up. Surgical intervention is also an expensive undertaking, usually not covered by medical insurance, as it is purely cosmetic in nature. Using a wig or a toupee is a quick and efficient way to cover hair loss. There are, however, some risks associated with wearing a wig or toupee and this is where the pros and cons of wigs and toupees to hide hair loss gets trickier. To keep some wigs and toupees attached, doctors can surgically implant a hooking device in the scalp area behind the ears. In other cases, wire from the wig is surgically implanted into the scalp. These types of procedures can be costly and can also leave you open to the possibility of infection. Of course, the choice is yours and, if you think about it, having a choice of treatments is better than having none at all.
