Zinc And Its Role In Hair Loss



There are a variety of causes associated with hair loss. Obviously, genetics can play a major role in your hair future. Some medical conditions, such as thyroid disease and Alopecia, can also result in hair loss. Other causes may be temporary in nature, such as extreme stress or a side effect of a medication you may be taking. A lesser-known cause of hair loss is vitamin and mineral deficiencies in your diet. This is where zinc and its role in hair loss come into play. Researchers have shown that diets lacking in zinc and its role in hair loss are directly related.

Zinc plays an important role in our over all good health. Zinc and its role in hair loss is the main symptom that we are discussing in this article, but a diet lacking in zinc can cause other health concerns as well, some potentially serious. Other symptoms associated with zinc deficiency are stunted growth, loss of appetite, slow wound healing, impaired sense of taste and smell, frequent infections, vision problems, and skin lesions. Extreme stress has also been shown to deplete zinc from our systems. Obviously, besides controlling hair loss, there are other more important reasons to maintain a recommended balance of zinc in your diet. Most, if not all, of these symptoms will go away once zinc is added to your diet.

As I mentioned before, zinc and its role in hair loss is the main focus of this article, so let’s return to just that. Just why does a zinc deficiency in our diets cause hair loss? One explanation is that a body deprived of zinc causes a change in hair protein structure. In laboratory tests done on animals, the test group that received the recommended amount of zinc in their diets grew hair at a normal rate. On the other hand, the test group that was deficient in zinc suffered from thinning hair and baldness. Not only does zinc seem to promote hair growth, in some cases with humans, a diet rich in zinc has even reversed hair that had turned gray back to its original color. Imagine that, not only will you have a full, thick head of hair, but also it may never go gray.

In closing, zinc and its role in hair loss is only one part of the equation. Hair loss is an unfortunate side effect, but not necessarily the only one you should be concerned with. Knowing that dietary deficiencies can lead to other health issues is key to maintaining your own good health. The best advise you can take is this, maintain a healthy diet full of all the essential vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to, not only produce healthy hair, but keep us well and functioning in general. Exercise regularly, don’t smoke, and limit your alcohol consumption. These are all things that you can do to keep your body healthy and strong and decrease your chances of hair loss.
